Monday: Achieve Great Things Podcast / Season 1, Episode 22: Clarence B. Jones.
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. day, I’ll be listening to this podcast featuring Clarence B. Jones, Martin’s lawyer and his friend. Clarence is the author of Behind the Dream: The Making of the Speech that Transformed a Nation. I read this short book a few years ago and highly recommend it.
Martin Luther King, Jr. day is a time for remembrance & reflection, of being open hearted & open minded, of trying to walk in shoes other than my own. I came across this Ted Talk featuring Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison. They are the founders of GirlTrek and are on a mission “to reduce the leading causes of preventable death among Black women – and build communities in the process.” Reading about their work, I learned that 137 African American women die every day from heart disease, a preventable condition. That’s one woman every 11 minutes, more than those that die from gun violence, cigarette smoking, and HIV combined. To help with this crisis, GirlTrek is on a quest to help one million African American women through walking. They learned that walking only 30 minutes a day can decrease by 50 percent the risks of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, alzheimer’s, and dementia.
GirlTrek is embarking on an awesome mission and this Ted Talk will be tomorrow’s listen.
Wednesday: Masters in Business with Barry Ritholtz / An Interview with Jack Bogle.
The world lost a legend last week. Jack Bogle was the father of the Index Fund and the founder of Vanguard. He revolutionized finance as we know it. He fought to make it happen and spent decades dedicated to his mission. As Warren Buffet said, “Jack did more for American investors as a whole than any individual I’ve known. A lot of Wall Street is devoted to charging a lot for nothing. He charged nothing to accomplish a huge amount.”
I’ll be re-listening to this interview with Barry Ritholtz. It’s a great primer on Jack’s mission and his background. There are plenty of nuggets of wisdom in this podcast, here are a few:
“The index fund gives you the advantage of long term compounding of returns while eliminating the tyranny of long term compounding of costs.”
“There’s not an economics course, there’s not an MBA course in investing or finance that doesn’t say basically Indexing is the way. It’s the data that matters. It’s the data.”
Rest in Peace Jack and Thank You.
Thursday: Stuff You Should Know Podcast / The July 20th Plot to Assassinate Hitler.
Just found this podcast which seems like a gold mine for the curious. This episode is about those who plotted to stop Hitler from within.
Friday: Meet the Composer with Nadia Sarota / Paul Simon’ Curious Mind.
For this week’s creative listen, turning to the Meet the Composer Podcast. New to this one too. That’s what The Starting Line Up is all about, doing a little bit of work to uncover some gems in the podcasting universe that can help us think different, learn knew things, and listen to podcasts we might not have uncovered otherwise. Meet the Composer hasn’t posted anything new in a while but there’s a pretty decent archive on iTunes to dig into.
Thanks for reading and happy listening!
